This thesis reports an investigation and study of the students' learning conditions in modern distance education. The study is designed mainly to explore the learning situation of college English in the teaching model of modern distance education and the students' evaluation of distance teaching and learning model, and secondarily to investigate the students' situation of using learning resources and learning support services system. This study may serve as a reference for the teaching and learning of college English in modern distance education in the future.The subjects in this study are the students in Gansu External Study Center, Modern Distance Education of Communication University China. Aimed at the concrete conditions in modern distance education, questionnaires were designed on distance education and the situation of distance learning and college English learning. The data were statistically analyzed by using Statistical Package for Social Sciences(SPSS 10.0). In addition, many subjects were interviewed irregularly. The following questions are addressed to:1) What is the situation of the students' learning college English in the teaching model of modern distance education? Can the students adapt to the teaching and learning models in modern distance education?2) What is the situation of the students' using learning resources and learning support services? And what are their opinions of distance teaching and learning?Findings indicate that most students do not adapt to distance teaching and learning model and have not made full use of the present distance learning resources and learning support services. They hope that they can get guidance and training from educational institutions and instructors on distance learning strategies and methods, and that they can be provided with richer course resources and better distance learning support services. In particular, the majority of the students urgently need intensive instruction in learning college English.The present thesis is composed of five parts. Chapter One introduces the objects, background and significance of the study. Chapter Two presents a review of the literature on distance education. Chapter Three expounds theories relating to English teaching and learning in distance education. Chapter Four highlights the present study by describing the subjects and the conducting procedure. The results are described and discussed, too. Chapter Five reaches the conclusion of the study, provides practical implications, points out the limitations of the study, and gives recommendations for further researches.
