With the advent of the 21st century and with the development of mass media and globalization, international culture exchanges have become increasingly important. Movie, as a carrier of human culture and with its easy accessibility, has gained unprecedented development. In this trend, we are happy to find that more and more Chinese movies have attracted the world's attention. Combining its unique culture with modern technology, Chinese movies show a new face and stand for a new force that exerts influence on world culture. In promoting these movies in the world market, the translation of subtitles becomes an important factor. On examining the subtitling of some selected successful Chinese movies in recent years, it is found that domestication is preferred especially in delivering culture-loaded elements to avoid foreignness and strangeness. Thus, the target readers will find it easier to accept and understand the TT. This paper will analyze this phenomenon with the guidance of Venuti's and Schleiermacher's preference of foreignization to domestication as foreignization is a strategy believed to advocate culture diversity and makes foreign cultures seen in the TT and further enrich the culture of the target language. Through analyzing different groups of subtitling concerning Chinese cultures, this paper will explore the negative effects played by domestication in delivering source culture in global culture context, seek the hidden reasons for choosing the strategy of domestication and further propose suggestions for the further translations in this field.
