| Machiavellian culture is an essential component of traditional Chinese culture. It is also the field in which scholars have done most of their work when reflecting the nationality; however, people hold different views on it, some speak highly of it while some do not. Starting with the analysis of the popular literary work Emperor Yong Zheng written by February River, this thesis try to discover the reasons of its production, development and popularity in our daily life. Moreover, the thesis also includes a tentative exploration on the function of Machiavellian culture and the appropriate measures we should take on the position of the nation and society. The thesis is made up of three parts:The first part demonstrates the dominant position of Machiavellian culture and its cultural rationality. Everything's existence is the result of adaptation to the environment. To find the reasons why Machiavellian culture is so powerful and everlasting, firstly we should analyze the Chinese cultural context from ancient time till now. The production and development of Machiavellian culture are based on two social facts. They are the initial political system in remote antiquity and the political institution in ancient times. Through analyzing the cultural context, we can find the cultural rationality of Machiavellian culture. The second part is about the cultural self-identity of Machiavellian application in Emperor Yong Zheng. February River's Emperor Yong Zheng is a very popular book and has great impact on the society in recent years. The description of Machiavellian culture in this book is very deep-going, which leads to controversies. This thesis makes penetrating analysis on the characters and their tactical actions described in Emperor Yong Zheng. By doing so, the thesis tends to show the cultural identity of Machiavellian application and its inevitability determined by the contexts and laws. The third part discloses the hypocrisy of Machiavellian culture. The Chinese Machiavellian culture has one main feature. Often Machiavellian culture is disguised by a non-tactical system from the outside rather than exposed directly. This forms the hypocrisy of Machiavellian culture. In this part, the thesis probes deep into the reasons, processes and functions of the production of such hypocrisy through analyzing different views on running a country by several ancient Chinese thinkers. |
