Three Father Images In Chinese Modern Literature

In Chinese modern literature, father images have special cultural symbolic meaning. The anti-feudal and anti-patriarchal ideological trends give a new theme in the relationship between father and son, that is "patricide" . Fathers standing for autocracy and backwardness have been heated study objects. In fact, beyond the theme of "patricide" , there are some fathers with humanity that seldom are paid attention to or need to be reinterpreted. This text chooses three father images as the representatives and expounds from four parts.First, sorting out and rethinking the researches on father images. This part summarizes methods and achievements of the researches on father images. The weakness is pointed out that it obstructs the research on father images beyond the theme of patricide. So, this text will focus on these father images.Second, the forbearing father image. Comparatively speaking, these fathers give more to their sons but are in contradiction with them because of fathers' one-side supplies. In the parenthood conflict, fathers' tragedy is obvious, which causes people to introspect the question of "how to be father".Third, the humane father image. Authors pursue the beauty of human nature and feelings on this father image because these fathers give much consideration and guide to their children in daily life. Fathers' love has been depicted fully in articles. The humane father image also has definite cultural significance. The cultural traditions of non-violation of human nature and pursuit of harmonious parenthood relationship become the bases of the existence of humane fathers.Fourth, the complicated father image. Some authors have a complex attitude to fathers in big families because of the contradiction to criticize and yearn for the household culture. Fathers in the works are compounds of autocracy and humanity, degeneration and repentance. In the contrast of the past father-and-son stories, the complicated father images show special features and relevant abundance.
