The basic target of education is to make students be independent and effective learners. It's very important to make the students learn how to study and foster their valid learning strategies. Valid learning strategies can not only improve learning efficiency, but also benefit students' leanings. The study of learning strategies is a reflection of "the students-center" thought. Modern English teaching pays more and more attention to learners' independent studying Making the students learn how to study has been an important part of English teaching. To make the students grasp effective learning strategies during English study, teachers must guide students to use these learning strategies properly . And it's also necessary for the students to have special training of learning strategies step by step.Listening is not only an important skill, but also the first requirement and the most popular method of communication in English learning. Listening, speaking, reading, writing and translation are the basic skills in learning English. However, Listening is the weakest among them for vocational college students. Language knowledge can be changed into listening comprehension with listening strategies. Therefore, it is necessary for teachers to train students' listening strategies in teachingIn and abroad, many scholars have done a lot of researches on foreign language learning strategies, which have gain fruitful results. But up till now, researches on English (as a foreign language) learning strategies mostly focus on undergraduates, lacking in vocational colleges. On the other hand, the achievement in practical research, especially in experimental research on training is far more inadequate. With enlarging students—recruiting in vocational colleges, vocational college students' English standard status, features and countermeasures are quite different from undergraduates'. So we should make a research on strategies of vocational colleges so as to guide our learning methods and provide scientific basis for training strategies.The present thesis is an effective way to solve the vocational college listening comprehension problems in learning foreign language, using some basic theories of learning strategies. The Oxford(1990) classification of learning strategies used in this dissertation is considered the most systematical and acceptable. That is ,the learningstrategies consist of memory strategies, cognitive strategies, compensation strategies, meta-cognitive strategies and social strategies. Furthermore, writer illustrates the features and status of English learning for vocational colleges, and displays language learner strategies' status in vocational colleges with some basic theories of learning strategies.Nowadays one of the most popular classifications of learning strategies is Oxford's (1990) Strategies Inventory for Language Learning (SILL). This paper uses SILL to survey the students' status of English listening strategies in Wuhan Vocational College of Communications. The result of the survey and analysis on the learning strategies of the vocational students shows that there is a significant difference in the learning strategies between male and female vocational students, and finds significant and positive correlation between the scores and strategies . The vocational students obtained fewer scores of learning strategiesAccording to the analysis and findings of survey, here writer elaborates the procedure and the method of the strategies' training in Wuhan Vocational College of Communications. First, freshmen are divided into two classes.(experiment class and contract class) .Then, the experiment class students are trained 15weeks focusing on the following strategies: (l)Attention centralized strategies;(2)Guessing strategies;(3)Establishing schema strategies;(4)Vocabulary memorizing strategies;(5)Affective strategies;(6)Cooperating learning strategies . Finally, Writer compares the scores of three listening examinations (Before, middle and after training) after training. The consequence of experiment shows that the average score of experiment class is higher than contract class' after training , especially medium-standard students who benefit more than other students in training strategies. The training about these strategies applied in the English listening comprehension demonstrates that teaching students the learning strategies in listening is necessary and effective. Training of English listening strategies will not only promote teachers to improve teaching skills more scientifically, but also enhance the competence of English listening to a certain degree in vocational colleges.The research has just got initial experiment achievement. Both the second language teachers and students should be sufficiently aware of the above learning strategies in English listening comprehension. What's more, there are still many problems to besolved in the English listening teaching.
