Lin Fengmian, one of the initiators and men of action of the modern Chinese art education at the beginning of the 20th century, put into practice Mr. Cai Yuanpei' s thoughts on "art education" thoroughly. He advocated academic freedom and took in anything valuable when introducing foreign arts, sorting out Chinese arts, mediating arts at home and abroad and creating modern arts. In his persistent study on art, he brought forth new ideas, many of them are significant and valuable, which undoubtedly have much influence on the modern art education and can be used for reference. This thesis probes into the root as well as the contents of Lin Fengmian' s thoughts on art education, and studies its historical contributions and enlightenment . given to modern art education.The thesis is composed of the following four parts:Part one: A brief account of Lin Fengmian' s life and how his thoughts come into being.Part two: An analysis of Lin Fengmian' s thoughts on art education, which includes five aspects:Firstly, the function of art-"art ideal and thecountry rescued by art" .Secondly, the teaching thought-academic freedom andincorporating things of diverse nature;Thirdly, teaching students according to their aptitude and putting much emphasis on their innovation;Fourthly, molding personality and advocating overall development;Lastly, choosing teachers strictly based on their talents.Part Three: The historical contributions of Lin Fengmian' s thoughts on art education and its limits;Part Four: The reference value and the enlightenment of Lin Fengmian' s thoughts on art education to the development of modern art education, which are embodied in two aspects:Firstly, the pluralistic, equal, open and harmonious idea of running a school;Secondly, the idea of encouraging voluntary and free involvement in art by the talented.
