The suicide is a serious social and public health problem. However, the causes of suicide and its multitude traits still remain unclear. The occurrence rate is closely connected with suicide attitude of people. There were some researches showing that the number of suicide in youth and teenagers have increased year by year. In this study, the attitudes to suicide from the teachers and students in colleges were to be analyzed and compared between the different kinds of subjects.Methods532 teachers and 1004 students were randomly selected by stratified cluster sampling from universities and colleges and were investigated with the questionnaires of suicide attitude (QSA), which included 29 items and reflected four dimensions: the attitude to suicide behavior (F1), attitude to persons who committed suicide or attempt to suicide (F2), attitude to family members of suicider (F3), attitude to euthanasia (F4), and rated by 1-5 scores. Three kinds of attitudes were differentiated by two cut off points: 2.5 and 3.5;that is the score under 2.5 means positive attitude to suicide, the score between 2.5 to 3.5 meansconflict or neutrality to suicide, and the score over 3.5 means negative attitude. The Chi-squar test and multiple linear regression analysis were used to analyse and compare the data of the 4 dimensions (Fl, F2, F3, F4 ) from the teacher and the students in colleges.Results1. Attitude towards suicide in the college teachersAttitude to suicide behavior (Fl) in teachers: 69.6% of the teachers was in conflict, 18.8% understanding, and 11.7% discrimination. Fl was associated with the factors of sex, professional title, and class hour, and number of scientific research ( x2=7.18,9.57,13.56,19.38, /?<0.05) .Attitude to persons who committ suicide or attempt to suicide (F2): 69.6% of the teachers was in conflict, 26.7% understanding, and 3.8% discrimination. F2 was associated with the factors of professional title, post, and number of scientific research ( x2=12.17,12.46,22.64, p<0.05) .Attitude to family members of suiciders (F3): 56.78% of teachers was in understanding, 42.5% conflict, 0.8% discrimination^ was associated with the factors of marital status, professional title, and number of scientific research ( x2 =10.35,13.54,23.94, p<0.05) .Attitude to euthanasia (F4): 61.7% of teachers was in understanding, 32.7% conflict, and 5.6% discrimination. F2 was associated with discipilines, the years of formal schooling, and number of scientific research ( x 2=10.43,13.74,24.52,;?<0.05) .The influential factors of attitude to suicide in teachers were showed that sex, post, discipline, annual number of scientific research were entered F1 regression equation (R2=0.059);Marital status, post, class hour, annual number of scientific research were entered F2 regression equation (R2=0.059);Marital status was entered F3 regression equation (R2=0.017);Sex, marital status, professional title were entered F4 regression equation (R2=0.058).2. Attitude towards suicide in the college studentsAttitude to suicide behavior (Fl): 44.9% of the students was in conflict, 34.1% discrimination, and 16.0% understanding. Fl was associated with sex, grade, source of students, major, and parent situations ( x2=32.13,23.13,15.14, 53.95,18.15,;?<0.05) .Attitude to persons who committ suicide or attempt suicide (F2): 53.2% of the students was in conflict, 43.0% understanding, and 3.8% discrimination. F2 was associated with sex, grade, major, and parent situations ( x 2=22.48,10.72, 34.88,22.98, p<0.05) .Attitude to family members of suicider (F3): 56.78% of the students was in understanding, 42.5% conflict, and 0.8% discrimination. F3 was associated with sex, grade, major, source of students, and parent situations ( x 2=23.66, 14.71, 32.80,14.48,24.13, /?<0.05) .Attitude to euthanasia (F4): 46.4% of the students was in conflict, 44.6% understanding, and 9.0% discrimination. F4 was associated with sex, grade, major, source of students, and parent situations ( x 2= 14.97,28.37, 32.82,10.89, 14.61,/?<0.05) .The influential factors of attitude to suicide in students were showed that sex, age, major, parent situations was entered Fl regression equation (R2=0.058);Sex, age, major and parent situations were entered F2 regression equation (R2=0.085);Sex and parent situations were entered F3 the regression equation (R2=0.060);Sex and major were entered F4 regression equation (R2=0.028).3. The difference and correlation of attitudes to suicide bewteen teachers and studentsTher esults showed that 18.8% with understanding, and 69.5% with conflict in teachers were higher than that in students;11.7% with discrimination in teachers was lower than that in the students in the Fl. 26.9% with understanding in teachers is lower than that in the students;69.5% with conflict in teachers was hugher than that in students in F2. 57.6% with understanding in teachers washigher than that in the students;41.5% with conflict in teachers was lower than that in students in F3. 62.1% with understanding in teachers was higher than that in students;32.1% with conflict in teachers was lower than that in students in F4 ( x2=73.87,39.09,6.91,26.98,/?<0.05) .In all items of QSA, 24.9% of teachers and 24.6% of sudents have chosen 3, that is, the attitudes with conflict or neutrality to suicide, and there was not statistical significance between the teachers and students. There were not statistically significant correlations among Fl, F2, F3, and F4 (r=-0.089, 0.047, 0.000, and -0.038 respectively, p>0.05).ConclusinsThe most teachers were with conflict or neutrality attitude to suicide behavior and person who committed suicide or attempt to suicide;with positive, condone or understanding attitudes to family members of suicider and euthanasia. The most students were with conflict or neutrality to suicide behavior;with positive, condone or understanding attitudes to persons who committ suicide or attempt to suicide, family members of suicider and euthanasia. There are some differences between the teachers and students in the attitudestowards suicide, which may be related with to age, life experience, profession, length of work, social position etc.
