Baren is not only a famous novelist and expert in literary criticism, but also has writtenmany essays, dramas, poems, historical articles, etc. He is one of the few generalists in theChinese literary history.The realistic literary thought is the core of Baren's literary thoughts, and he tried tofollow, propose and practice realism in his whole life. Baren proposed that we should pursue"utility" in literature by pursuing "artistry". The realism calls for the reality of the article inreflecting real life. However, Baren insisted that the author should not copy the real life,instead they should improve their self-culture and make effort initiatively to discover theessence hidden behind the phenomena. Baren has made a research on what is and how toachieve "reality" and "prototype", which are two essential characteristics of realism.Emphasis on humanity is one of the most important part in Baren's realistic literarythoughts, and comments on humanity in many articles such as "Comments on Humanity" wasthe result of the improvement of his literary thoughts. Baren's comments on humanity in the1950s was a succession of the thought of discovering, emphasizing and respecting humandeveloped during the May 4th campaign period. Today, our proposal of "human-based theory"also provided evidence for the up to date meaning of Baren's comments of "humanity".Baren formed his criticizing style in practicing literary criticism. In his essays, not onlyhis characters—enthusiasm, bravery and honesty, but also his enriched knowledge and thestrict logical thoughts have been reflected. In his essays, you can find out the features such asbeing brief and vigorous, profundity in commenting and being popular and easily understood.Moreover, being used to fusing his unique experiences into the literary comment he formedhis distinctive style.
