The thesis is intended to make a systematic analysis of abbreviations in Nautical English by means of corpus-based study and some modern statistical methods. Although abbreviations contain rich connotations and information, which could make articles precise and succinct, they are very complicated and variable in terms of their structural, grammatical features as well as usage. All these problems may cause certain difficulties for teachers and students in teaching and learning Nautical English. In this thesis, based on the quantitative analysis of the comparison of abbreviations between NEC and another corpus BROWNAB, some conclusions could be drawn that abbreviations are widely employed in Nautical English and most of them are just specialized in this field. Besides, this thesis also tries to analyze the occurrences of high frequency abbreviations in NEC, and further summarizes the important features of Nautical English abbreviations from their linguistic and non-linguistic perspectives. From these results, some advices would be provided to teachers and students in their future teaching and learning.
