Xu Lingxiao was an important research specialist in the modern history of Chinese Traditional Opera, but he didn't get much attention by the educational field. He made greater contributions both in the concept of "Chinese Traditional Opera Aesthetics" and the critical methods of "Chinese Traditional Opera". This paper attaches great importance to study the latter one. There are two major ideas run through his theory of drama: Firstly, he gave a warning to the whole drama field for which they paid much attention to actors at that time, and believed the research fellows should unearth the essence and the whole meaning of drama in order to stipulate the principles for Chinese Traditional Opera. It can improve the culture status of Chinese Traditional Opera by these ways. Secondly, he thought the most advantage of Chinese Traditional Opera is to "writing realistically" for life by artistic forms.This kind outlook on Chinese Traditional Opera presented a way of theory study -"Stage" as foothold - on the critical methods. Xu Lingxiao got involved in Chinese Traditional Opera criticism as a literati, but he never forgot the special character of stage of Chinese Traditional Opera. He had rich experience of seeing the opera and had the good relationship with the famous actors, which provided excellent source for his criticism of ? Chinese Traditional Opera. In addition, Xu Lingxiao involved himself in writing script illustration and revising, which embodied the direct influence the criticizers brought to Chinese Traditional Opera activities. < The research of Beijing Opera Literature > is Xu Lingxiao's most systematicness work for Chinese Traditional Opera, it is of great value to improving the culture status of Beijing Opera and clearly understanding the essence feature of Beijing Opera. When we studied the writing methods of this book, we found there's much knowledge that can be made use of in different batches of Chinese Traditional Opera research fellows, and to set up the independent language system and others aesthetics issues of Chinese Traditional Opera. When we investigated his activities of ChineseTraditional Opera Criticism, we found Xu Lingxiao changed a research fellow from a Chinese Traditional Opera viewer, but not from an audience of in a sense of Chinese Traditional Opera literature, at the same time he possessed erudition and ability about researching text and writing, all of these led to take on a unique aspect of his traditional' opera criticism: It was beginning to stage character of traditional opera and didn't stop here, but devoted himself to improving the literature status of Chinese Traditional Opera. Xu Lingxiao gave a definition to literature is a broad sense.Xu Lingxiao's writing style of "Drama" is very unique. This writing style provided varied possibilities for the forms of Chinese Traditional Opera Criticism. It presented Chinese Traditional Opera artistic truth by Chinese Traditional language system. The theoretical articles have been presented by characters of smooth and easy & vivid and vigorous by this writing style. This paper believes that Xu Lingxiao's writing style is more proper than the theory system of the Western countries' essence feature. It's more fitting to. the characters and closing to nucleus of Chinese Traditional Opera Artistic. But this style had some abuses, the most obvious one is that it couldn't build up a clear and tight frame of theory stably, in this way, the criticizers' fair comprehension and in-depth study had been limited by the oversights and omissions of this theory frame system.
