This dissertation intends to analyze the landscape paintings in Mao Zedong's age from six aspects from iconological point of view. The first aspect, the reasons for the formation of guidelines for art and literature in Mao Zedong's age and the accompanied pattern for beauty. Based on the situations of China in the 20th century, the paper focuses on the analysis of politics, economy, society and culture since the time of Yan' an to interpret the inner reasons and deep sense. The second , the logical relationship between the formation and application of guidelines for art reflecting the wills of authorities. It takes the painting Beautiful Country as an example to illustrate the political intentions of leaders, the collective construction of the authorities, the general recognition of the public and the obedience of the artists. The third , the relationship between Mao Zedong's personal view and the formation of the guidelines of art. Mao's Utopia plot is analyzed so is the reflection of the plot in political decision. Then the leading group, not the direct translation of Mao's personal ideas or his works, decides the guidelines. And Mao is the icon in the formation of guidelines. The forth aspect, by analyzing the landscape paintings taking Mao's poems as the source, paintings of the new country and industrialization, paintings dedicated to chairman Mao, and the red style of the landscape paintings in the cultural revolution, it exemplifies the developing disciplines of landscape paintings in Mao's age and the new schematicfeatures and expressing methods. This is the main part of this dissertation as the illustration of the developing history of landscape paintings in Mao' s age.The fifth aspect, in Mao' s age when politics is in the first place, what are the innovating methods and strategies in landscape paintings and what is their influence on today. The sixth aspect, why did the intellectuals accept the reformations of Marxism in the 1950s? what was the relationship between the art education and society, culture and ideology? In Mao' s age, the landscape spirits have been transformed from "forms serving Tao" to "art serving politics" . It is impossible for the landscape painters to reconstruct the tradition of "Tao being superior to the power" . Since the philosophy of Laozi and Zhuangzi has been criticized, the landscape painters had to go into the real world to seek new topics and new form. It is the intention of this dissertation to analyze the sociological, cultural, economic, political reasons and Mao' s personal ideas accouting for the previous changes in landscape paintings.
