Over the practice of more than 2000 years, traditional Chinese painting's pen and ink has gradually e4volved from a pure tool and media material into a kind of culture sign and then been endowed with spirit under the surface of tool. Needless to say, pen and ink has created abundant art shapes for Chinese nationality painting. During the use of over 2000 years, many painters have created their masterpieces due to it, many writers' thoughts and ideas have found their places due to it.Also because of it, the present Chinese painters and callingraphers have the never-changing topic. From a changing angle, however, pen and ink also gives the present Chinese painters and calligraphers a burden that won't be removed. Apart from fully firming its positive sides, this paper also expounds pen and ink's negative aspects. This paper first analyzes pen and ink's position and function between Song Dynasty and Yuan Dynasty, considering that before Yuan Dynasty pen and ink began to have the function of expressing emotions freely, thus obtaining its semi-independent appreciation of beauty. At the end of Ming Dynasty, Dong Qichang gave us an epoch-making change by raising pen and ink to a level of language art, indicating that pen and ink was no longer a tool and achieved its independent appreciation of beauty completely. But not knowing whether beause of wrong understanding about forefathers or the loss of free soul, our descendants are batter at the arts of pen and ink, but weaker in creating subjects in the painting, why?To the auther's mind, it is because of scholars' play with pen and ink, which causes the loss of harmony and closeness between man and nature. Pen and ink erodes too many "scholars'" spirit of striving to become stronger. Therefore after the above analysis and assessment, the auther puts forward his own ideas about traditional Chinese painting teaching.
