Shimen County lies in the north of Hunan province. There are just some small differences between the several parts of Shimen county about phonological system. After investigating it personally, the paper entirely describes the phonological system of the county. And summarizes out the characteristics of Shimen dialect. In this paper, I do my best to reveal the real visage of Shimen dialect. It maybe fill the gap in the systemic studies of Shimen dialect. And enrich the production of the Xinan mandarin of Hunan.This paper includes the following eight parts and an appendix.The introduction shows us geography, population, history evolution of Shimen county, it also describes the general situation of dialect used in Shimen , and tell us the intramural differences. It also introduces the present studies on Shimen dialect, the emphasis and the main purpose of our research.The first chapter describes the phonological system, including initials, finals and tones.The second chapter entirely analyzes the characteristics of initials, finals and tones of Shimen dialect.The third chapter describes the system of different pronunciations in one word . It includes the literary reading and colloquial reading of initials, finals, tones and the old pronunciation and new pronunciation.The forth chapter is the comparison between phonological system of Shimen dialect and the Middle Age phonetics in initials, finals, tones.The fifth chapter is the comparison between Shimen dialect and Beijing dialect. It displays the phonetic discrepancies of Shimen dialect and Beijing dialect.The sixth chapter is the phonetics comparison between Shimen dialect and Changde dialect. It posts the connection of Shimen dialect andtypical Xinan mandarin of hunan.The further discussion nails down that Shimen dialect belongs to Xinan mandarin.
