In this article, we have centered its attention on the appearance of Chinese discourse markers in international conversations with the purpose of exploring the relationship between discourse markers and metapragmatic awareness of speaker. Furthermore the objectively pragmatic function of discourse markers dominated by metapragmatic awareness has been revealed. As preconditions of the discussion, the content of discourse markers has been defined in this paper that include "you know","I mean","if I'm not wrong", "actually","incidentally","well"as the research object. After comparison about discourse markers research between in Chinese and in English, it shows the study for discourse markers in Chinese lag behind. To complement this insufficiency, it based on Jef Verschueren' s theory, which is about the adaptability when the utterer making choices and the metapragmatic awareness, the common discourse markers, has been cognized from the view that a utterer choose the vocabulary in international conversations. A conclusion extracted from large numbers of samples shows that discourse markers reflect seven major metapragmatic awareness of the utterer, viz. 1) the metapragmatic awareness for the relationship establishment between the utterer and the interpreter; 2) the metapragmatic awareness which start, strength, convert and end the topic; 3) the metapragmatic awareness for linking up the speech; 4) the metapragmatic awareness for taking the attention from the interpreter; 5) the metapragmatic awareness which shows the...
