The Study Of British Bilingual Education

Bilingual education is an important problem in the whole world.With the tide of globalization,more and more countries implement the study of bilingual education.The scholars in our country also study the practice of bilingual education in other countries for developing and reforming the bilingual education in our country.However,few scholars in our country had studied the British bilingual education.So,the purpose of this dissertation is to study the British bilingual education in order to provide some useful advices to develop Chinese bilingual education.There are four nations in Britain.They are English,Welsh,Scotlish and Irish.The population of English accounts for 80%. English is the official language,Welsh,Gaelic,and Irish are the indigenous languages.The local authority practices bilingual education program in order to preserve their culture and languages.The bilingual education in three Celtic areas is named as "maintenance bilingual education"which use indigenous language and English in order to preserve their languages and culture. However ,the bilingual education in England belongs to "transitional bilingual education" whose purpose is to make the children of migration be fluent in English and adapt to the mainstream education.This dissertation studies the background,history and practice of British bilingual education,then, analysed the problems in the practice of British bilingual education. There are two results from this study.First,the practice of the bilingual education carries out from the bottom to the top.Second,the bilingual education in three Celtic areas is to preserve their indigenous languages and culture,and the shortage of bilingual teachers and curricular resourses are their problems.However, the bilingual education in Wales had made much progress which brings the whole society and the education system with positive effects.According to the study results,our country should cultivate qualified bilingual teachers,develop bilingual curricular resourses , create a better learning environment,carry out many bilingual educational plans and set up a continuous bilingual educational system.
