Chinese painting is characterized by and developed with line drawing. From the naive line drawing on the painting pottery of a primitive society to the implicit line drawing by the painting master in Qing Dynasty, each embodies the typical spirit of Chinese painting. Ignorant of the nature, the primitive people used line as their basic method to express their original life condition. The painting pottery in Neolithic culture mostly used simple lines as the marks of materials, and these lines had already some significance of decoration. It was in Xia, Shang, Zhou periods in Slave Society that the bronze and developed brilliantly, and the bronze decorative pattering were mainly composed of lines. The discovery of painting on silk from Chu Tomb in Warring states established formally the principal part of traditional Chinese painting modeled by lines. During Qin and Han Periods the use of lines changed diversification, the lines featured strongly under the use of the artists` brushes. And since WeiJin periods the lines with some significance of calligraphy appeared, and the expression of lines increased further. The Five Dynasties were the nature time for the line drawing; both the regularity and aesthetic of line itself increased. After Song, Yuan, Ming, Qing Dynasties, the line drawing developed gradually into ink-drawing, and the ink-drawing became the expression means dominantly. To be modeled by line drawing is main expression of Chine painting, for the line drawing is the idealist medium from level modeling to three-dimensional modeling. More emphasis has been paid on the practice of the line drawing in Chinese painting, and the simple straight forward style of line drawing, as one kind of language of modeling, is the symbol of Chinese line drawing as independent and language. So far, the ink-drawing is still a hot issue in the field of Chinese painting, and the foundational contradiction is still the modeling and ink-drawing. The inexorable trend from ink-drawing to the modeling is the blend and consistence between line and shape. The significant line drawing poses the characteristic of decoration, emotion, philosophy, ethnics and times. The analysis of the line drawing's features and sequences of developments would increase our understanding of Chinese painting's quintessence—Line drawing, and would help deepen our comprehension of Chinese painting.
