The belief of the City God was one of folk belief activities with outstanding and special features in Chinese ancient times. Owing to the particularity of this kind of belief activity, a lot of scholars has paid close attention to and done much research on it since the Song Dynasty. However, the majority of the past research focused on exploring the antitype of the City God and historical evolution of the belief of the City God. In recent years, with foreign scholars getting involved in this field and the exploration and use of new historical data, some modern scholars began to research into the City God from the perspective of economy and obtained delightful results. Whereas, the relation between the belief of the City God and politics hasn't drawn scholar's enough attention.Based on what has been talked about above, hackling a great deal of documents and historical data and widening fields of vision, the dissertation tried to investigate the belief of the City God in the Ming and Qing Dynasties deeply from the point of view on politics to make up the deficiency of the previous research and promote the study of the belief of the City God as much as possible.The thesis was divided into five parts.Part 1, the introduction, analyzed briefly the study conditions in this field presently and expatiated on the origins of the study of the thesis.Part 2 investigated the rise and development of the belief of the City God from the perspective of politics and concluded that the development of the belief of the City God before the Ming and Qing Dynasties was the course of thickening its political color.Part 3 summarized the governors' attitude to the belief of the City God in the Ming and Qing Dynasties.
