Change The World Or Change Languages: Liang Chung-dai And His Poem Theoretics

Liang Chung-tai was a famous poet, poem theoretician and translator in the thirties. Liang Chung-tai, as a poem theoretician, has drawn the attention from domestic researchers day by day, because he not only participated in the historical course of introducing symbolism theory in the 1920-1930's, but also attempted to set up a Chinese " symbolism " system on the basis of a harmonious world, combined with Chinese and western theory of poetry. On one hand he is diligent in the exploration of the theory of poetry, on the other hand he cares about the creating practice of the poem and tries giving some proper guidance. What is more attracting is his research to the possibility of creating Chinese vernacular language. He advocates changing the spoken language in the vernacular, believing that it can be suited to express plenty of sentiment and ideas only after being chastened, which is embodied in his editing and translating work.In Chapter One, the research situation of Liang Chung-tai has been described synthetically. We will see that to "change languages" is more important than to "change the world" in Liang Chung-tai's theory. In Chapter Two, historical materials shows that Liang Chung-tai pays close attention to the language and translates. In Chapter Three, Liang Chung-tai's translation characteristic has been come out with in comparison with other translators. In the last chapter, the harmonious world has been pointed out as Liang Chung-tai's theory core. He hoped to rebuild a harmonious world, which was because the existing one has already been broken. The faith of harmony had influenced his attitude to the language and translation.Perhaps the efforts that he rebuilds the theory are not radical. But we can still say Liang Chung-tai's exploration work in theory of poetry has meaning of opening.
