| Growing up in a peculiar environment of the west of China, it's inevitable minority students to face the so-called psychological conflict when they enter college located in communities where densely populated by inhabitants of the Han Nationality. In order to cushion the clash and let them adapt themselves to campus life as soon as possible and prepare them for the future, it's quite necessary for us to examine the adaptability situation of the minority students in nowadays colleges. This research paper focus on the following points which are highly related to the lives of college students, namely: study, work and communications. It attempts to understand the reason for their inability or slow pace to adapt to the new life by taking a close look of the real picture. Furthermore it proposes some solutions to improve the adaptability for minority students. After investigation and analysis, the following principal conclusions are derived:First, the minority students, on a wide range, are faced with substantial difficulties in learning. The preparatory courses remedy, to certain extent, the weakness that they are not proficient in mandarin and no equipped with a solid knowledge base. Nevertheless, the faculties and education efficiency of those ethnic preparatory schools are far from satisfactory. The obstacles they have in learning are mainly due to their language inefficiency and relatively low quality of basic education they received. Universities have taken some considerate measures to get on with the problem. However, the question on how we can achieve a breakthrough on the progress we have already made, demands yet a profound thinking.Second, economic handicap is another crying problem that seriously affects the adaptability of minority students when they start their college lives. The facts that they have to pay for education presents huge pressure on and cast shadow in their life, when they need to make decisions on choice of school, enrolment etc. Aid-loan, scholarship, subsidies and provision of part-time job, all alleviate the financial stress and are useful for them to get hands-on experience. However it's sadly true that because of their own limitation the minority students are obviously in a disadvantageous position when they compete for opportunities like scholarship or part-time working offers.Third, another impediment that minority students have to deal with is their incapability of social life in the campus. After migrate to the Han-culture dominant environment and get on with people around them, they are vulnerable to feel some awkwardness: language difficulties in communication, drastic change in living style as food, dressing, housing, so to speak. The unique way of thinking, owing to the inherent ethnic belief, characteristic behavior in the special local culture from which they are brought up, will bring them experience of culture conflict, when come to a different environment. This kind of psychological sensation will pose a material impact on their feelings and behaviors. |
