Calligraphy is a type of unique art of Chinese nation. Its formation., coming down and development have a long history and complex cultural background. It links the society nation politics and economy, penetrating into literature art philosophy and religion, and also is an important cultural phenomenon of social life. The study of free and grass script in Dunhuang posthumous writing is of great importance to the history of Dunhuang calligraphy and the study of Dunhuang.Because of the peculiar geographical position of Dunhuang, it forms its own particular cultural situation. Any art is inseparable from it era, and a production of this era. To know the free and grass script of Dunhuang posthumous writing is to study the politics economy culture scholarship and Buddhism. Each piece of handwriting works is inseparable from the then aesthetic psychology. Dunhuang's writings are copied by those obscure folk writers who are engaged in copying script. Culture is the heritage of the former generation and would be influenced and penetrated each other, it will definitely be affected by the prevalent style of calligraphy. The calligraphy from Wei and Jin Dynasties to Wudai and the early Song Dynasty shows its unique style.There are about 50,000 volumes of Dunhuang script, including classics of Buddha and Confucious Jing Shi Zi and Ji and so on. Those scripts, ranging from East Jing Dynasty to Song Dynasty keep the writing works of 700 years. With long history and large quantity of scripts, they are rare sources in the Chinese calligraphic history and the important materials to study Chinese calligraphy.
