Some C-E translations of university title appellation terms were compared and the chaotic situation of present translation was found out. Result of further analysis shows that the way of finding equivalents for each title term of every translator is the cause of present confusion. The process of reviewing translation theories and methods further proves that regarding university title appellation terms as a system and translating them consistently is the solution to this problem.In order to translate systematically, this paper conceives a 4-step translation method and partially implements parts of the process. This practice is mainly proceeded on the basis of the websites of 12 universities, such as Beijing University, Tsinghua university, Fudan University and Dalian University of Technology (DUT) in China, Oxford University, Cambridge University, Birmingham University and Lancaster University in UK, Harvard University, MIT, Princeton University and Yale University in USA. Results of the practice display the feasibility of this method. However, it is a complicated project which requires the cooperation of experts in related fields, the association of government support, publishing houses and so on. Since this study will help to standardize the translation of university title appellation terms, appellation terms and proper nouns, and to standardize the language of modern Chinese and to boost the development of related branches like linguistics, sociolinguistics, culture, anthropology and so on, the author appeals to the public to give more concern to the translation of appellation terms, furthermore, with the view to improve the present situation of translation in China...
