The outstanding calligraphier Yan Zhenqing in Tang dynasty, born in 709,the third year of Zongjing long, died in the year of 785.He had been living for 77 years ,titled up to the teacher of emperor'son and honored as Yanlu Master by followers. The regular and pictographic script of Yan's had been reached a very high level with close connection and differences. This article only focuses on the part of pictographic script. There are six parts composed: the first comes to his living and arts experiences. His straightforward characters set a solid basis for his style in calligraphy. The time produced with his works, book reviews and scripts is also commmented. The second part talks about the popularity of Wang Xizhi's calligraghy before the appearence of Yan's pictographic script. It has set a road for following Yan' style of writing. The third part starts with the settings of prosperous Tang dynasty, promoting its style from the points of politics ,culture, economy, aesthetics, writing tools and materials. Form another side, his subjective hardworking and deep learning as well as calligraphy style based on home surroundings had produced Yan's calligraphy. The fourth part takes about the innovation of his style, making a comparision of spitits, writing, and strokes with Wang's calligraphy. The fifth part talks about three periods of his calligraphy, with different features. The last part lists the great influences of his style. A great many calligraphiers were created with inherit from different sides of Yan's calligraphy style. I suggest that we should have a deep research and learning on Yan's calligraphy. Never forget about the value of it. The spirit of innovation of Yan Zhenqing should be promoted, making a contribution to Chinese calligraphy. |
