| Emotional intelligence(EI) has been attentioned since it was brought out. Many people believed that EI is one of the most important factors for one's success. However, the studies of EI became jumbled with the more and more popular concept of EL The fatal defect is the disorder in the content and the structure of EI, for which the studies of EI were full of criticism. The overseas scholars advised a new pattern to study EI. They advocated that we should study EI under framework of emotional information processing and utilizing.The main method of this survey was questionnaire. We tested 552 college students in Wuhan by the tool of Emotional Intelligence Inventory designed by ourselves and other questionnares. This study included several parts. First ,we confirmed the structure and characteristic of the EL Then we verified that whether EI can differentiate from other important concept or not and probed into the correlative relationships among EI, stress from life-events and mental health. Finally, we focused our attention on the effects of EI and life-events on mental health, especially analyzed the main effects and moderation effects of four factors of EI in the relationship between life-events and mental health.There were several conclusions:1.The structure of EI of college students accorded with the Salovey and Mayer's theory. But the factor of regulating emotion could be divided into regulating self emotion and helping somebody to regulate emotion rather than viewed as onefold factor. We concluded that EI of the college students could be composed of four factors: perceiving emotion, helping somebody to regulate emotion, utilizing emotion to solve problem and regulating self emotion. The result of CFA supported this model of EI.2.After we restricted the category of the EI and excluded its patulous content, the concept of EI could differentiate from the three dimensions of Eysenk's Personality Structure.
