Balzac's masterpiece, Le Pere Goriot, prominent one in The Human Comedy, fully reveals his rich practical experience on art and his creative achievement. The previous researches on Le Pere Goriot were mostly confined to the traditional critical approaches, particularly to the limitation of the social and historical criticism. Those researches virtually highlight "techniques of character's representation", real and detailed depiction to environment, the characterization of typical ones, "enlightenment" language, and profound social significance and so on so forth. It can not fully get rid of the confinement of the traditional approaches and appropriately exhibit its deep complication in various levels and perspectives, even though Le Pere Goriot has been interpreted by the modern critical approaches. Thus, it is rather regretful for a classic work with the worldwide fame. Accordingly, this thesis is attempting to delve into the text and to present the exploiting views on the basis of "Dialogue" idea of the 20th century. The thesis will be divided into four chapters: Chapter one is intended to interpret and define the concept of "Dialogue". The thesis points out that the dialogue signifies the spiritual communication among subjects, who are equal, apart and communicative. The dialogue embodies five features, i.e. intention, relationship, synchronicity, equality and incompleteness. As five basic principles of dialogue, they mutually constitute foundation stone of dialogue, and relate with and depend on one another. Among these five ones, equality is the essence. Consequently, the dialogue will tend to be mission impossible if devoid of equality. Chapter two and three are aiming at analyzing the relationship of dialogue presented in the text in terms of dialogue idea. On the basis of this kind of relationship, it is concluded that there are three sorts of dialogue mode, i.e. dialogue mode of the explicit-implicit cross, implicit dialogue mode and self-dialogue mode. Among these three, dialogue modes of the explicit-implicit cross and implicit dialogue mode are the main ones in human communication. Both of them play the coequal roles and serve for the human communication jointly, and self-dialogue mode serves as a drive and headspring for them. Chapter four is involved in contemplation and conclusion on dialogue. In some sense, dialogue is an imprint of the human relation and a confirmation of human existence. Self-dialogue serves as a original drive for all the dialogues. An individual superior in the social communication and life pursuit is always based on his strong capacity of existence, to be specific, his capacity of self-dialogue is excelling and, at the same time, he is quick-minded, clinging and proficient in the techniques of dialogue.
