Requiring strict logic and coherence, scientific discourse often adheres to set forms and is therefore rich in cohesive devices. This paper intends to explore how the new scientific information progresses step by step in a scientific article from the angle of discourse analysis, specifically from the angle of logical cohesive devices. By the way, some recurrent, typical and more or less complete expressions of these devices are also listed. Through the study of large quantity of scientific articles, some fixed patterns may be found to guide readers' reading and understanding.Based on some literature review and linguistic study, this paper also wants to examine the features and functions of some common types of cohesive devices that are used among semantic paragraphs. According to the results of the research on semantic paragraphs, the thesis will continuously investigate the way of information progression in a whole text in order to comprehend the translation of scientific discourse thoroughly. The present study examines sixty three articles, the total coming to 12600 words, selected from a chemical English reading matter. Based on the analysis in accordance with some existing guidelines, the writer drew conclusions of information progression in the range of a complete discourse, such as in different types of illustration, different ways of information transmission would be applied to achieve different aims.In one word, we need to analyze the way of information progression through some logical cohesive devices. After the full analysis of information progression in scientific discourse, we may give out some suggestion theoretically and practically on how to understand the scientific discourse and intentions of writing.
