On The Expression Of Alternate Category In Modern Chinese

The dissertation regards alternation as a sub-category of iteration to study. It takes semantics as a main thread to discuss the expression of alternate category in modern Chinese. The dissertation gives detailed description of syntactic frames expressing alternation, not only pays attention to the sameness, but also the difference.The dissertation consists of five chapters in addition to closing remarks. The main contents are as follows:Chapter one is preface, briefly introduces the status quo of the study on semantic category, establishes the alternate category, discusses the feature of alternation and the difference between iteration and alternation, summarizes the former studies, defines the scope of our research.From chapter two to chapter four the dissertation gives detailed description of the expression of instantaneous alternation, short time alternation and long time alternation. The alternate patterns includes "hu'erA,hu'erB" and "huAhuB", "yihuirA,yihuirB" and "Ayihuir,Byihuir", "yizhenA,yizhenB" and "Ayizhen, B yizhen", "shi'erA,shi'erB" and "shiAshiB" and "youshihouA, youshihouB". The dissertation mainly discusses the alternate contents, the class of alternate items, the co-occurrence with adverbs and time elements, as well as the comparation with each other. The dissertation advances the preferred sequence of alternate contents, summarizes the verb-class and the adjective-class in each pattern, points out differences in alternate cycle and the co-occurrence with time elements.Chapter five discusses the pragmatic feature of alternate patterns. The order of alternate items is fixed, namely, the positive one is in front of the negative one. Thealternate patterns may use together, confined between the patterns whose cycles are same and between the instantaneous ones and short time ones. The patterns have choice in person, rejecting the second person; have choice in sentence-class, no admittance the positive imperative sentence and exclamatory sentence, also have choice in style, namely, spoken language and written language.Closing remarks summarizes the whole thesis and puts forward the task that should be made headway in the furture.
