Millitary affairs is a general term for everything related to armed struggle, ranging from national defence construction, armed force development, preparation and implementation of armed struggle to millitary science research. Millitary words refer to those words which have direct relation to millitary affairs. 483 various millitary atctions have been recorded in ZuoZhuan, 14 of which are large wars. A great many millitary words have been used to describe these millitary activities in ZuoZhuan. Through Systematic study on these millitary words in ZuoZhuan, we can know some aspect features and outline approximately about Chinese vocabulary in the periods of Zhou and Qing dynasty. According to Wangning, the periods of Zhou dynasty and Qing dynasty are Chinese derivative boom, the combinative law of sound and meaning is that similar sound has similar meaning. Therefore, with ZuoZhuan, which was complied in the periods of ChunQiu and ZhanGuo, as study object, it is helpful to explore the complete picture of origion and development of Chinese words. This thesis attempts to explore the origin of millitary words in ZuoZhuan based on the comprehensive analysis on them in terms of form, sound and meaning. In this sense, the writing of thesis can provide supporting materials and convincing solution for the foundation and improvement of Chinese vocabulary history. The thesis mainly consists of five parts. In the preface, the writer presents the aim of writing this thesis and introduces theories and methods applied in study. The basic theory in the study is three phase theory of words origin and development proposed by wangni. As to analytic methods, the witer uses the method in which meaning drives from sound proposed by scholars in Qing dynasty. Besides, comparative method proposed by Lu Zongda and Wangni is also adopted. The chapter one deals with something about the spread and annotation of ZuoZhuan.1) as to the time when ZuoZhuan was compiled, based on various versions, the writer believes that it was complied in the period of ZhanGuo 2) Sythesizing literature on ZuoZhuan, the writer explains the adopted edition. The second chapter defines millitary words. In ZuoZhuan, words related to millitary activities can be defined as millitary words. The third chapter classifies millitary words in Zuo Zhuan. 1) general picture. In ZuoZhuan, there are 533 millitary words, of which, 356 single syllable words, 174 double syllable words and 3 muti-syllable words. 2) According to meaning, the millitary words can be classified into ten catagories:armament, vehicle, millitary diplomacy, fortification, battle array, flag and drum, rewards and punishments, the ranks establishment, prisoner of war and war booty and fight. All Millitary words appeared in ZuoZhuan can be devided according to the above catagories . 272 words fall into fight category , involving march, plan, fight, help, marale and victory and defeat. The fourth chapter explores the original meaning of some millitary words in ZuoZhuan. Chinese words have surface use meaning and deep original meaning hidden in surface meaning. The thesis examines and verifies the original meaning of 42 millitary words according to the rule that meaning derives from sound. Chapter five deals with some conclusion drawn from the study. 1)Significance and academic value of study on millitary words. 2) there exsits close relation among millitary words in ZuoZhuan. With these words the whole story of history millitary events were recorded. 3) feature of millitary words—combination of sound and meaning. Based on the investigation on original meaning of words, the writer proposes three features:1) Sound conveys meaning. 2)Words with same original meaning relations have same meaning relations. 3) A word can have different meaning features owing to extension of meaning. Finally, the writer points out deficiency in the study.
