Traditional Chinese graphics is the heritage of Chinese ancient culture. It vividly reflects aesthetic mentality of our nation, and it embodies the traditional Chinese cultural characteristics as well. The development of science and technology, the evolvement of technical material, and the cultural exchange with foreign nations in Chinese history all contribute to the abundant forms that traditional Chinese graphics enjoy. We are now presented with an information-bound, globalized and modern society, and how can we achieve cognition of our ancient graphics and inherit the tradition and make full use of them in the process of designing? That shed some light in modern design for every designer who is willing to shoulder the responsibility of inheriting the tradition of our nation.The thesis is mainly divided into four parts. The first part endeavors to illustrate the different artistic characteristics of traditional graphics in relevant historical period. The second part makes an innovative study of the soul of traditional Chinese graphics in the respect of "shape", "essence", and "implication". The first element to be emphasized is "shape", which is mainly concerned with lineal designs and convolute designs in traditional graphics, the main two ethical factors employed in traditional Chinese design. The "shape" is a relatively complete and minute system. What is included in "essence" is to convey the effect of lucency and artistic conception in traditional plastic art, which embodies traditional Chinese philosophy and its aesthetic taste. The "implication" part makes a detailed analysis of the informative function of the particular ethical graphics from the perspective of disseminative theory. The third part is my application of the three elements in designing. The fourth makes a conclusion of my study and offers suggestions for the reform of artistic designteaching of our nation.The thesis endeavors to reveal some typical Chinese plastic features after making a careful study of the traditional Chinese graphics design. And it tries to find a solution to the combination of traditional graphics and modern design, which indicates that we should have a thorough understanding of our traditional artistic spirit, absorb and digest the wholesome element. Only in this way can we find the joint of tradition and modernity, invent the new artistic form featuring typical Chinese characteristics of the new age, and produce the design that both exemplifies our national features and win the recognition of international community.
