| This study researches the correlation between listening and speaking Can Do self-assessments of HSK (Elementary-Intermediate) test takers and HSK scores using empirical investigation and research. The research reveals: 1. To a degree, test takers' self-assessments can display their real language abilities; 2. Test takers' scores on the HSK (Elementary-Intermediate) can explain their real language abilities; 3. We can explain HSK scores on the basis of test takers' self-assessments. Obvious differences exist among test takers who score in different listening levels and, to a degree, in different sublevels. The listening score of the HSK (Elementary-Intermediate) is closely related with test takers' real listening and speaking abilities. Therefore, the division of levels and sublevels for the HSK (Elementary-Intermediate) listening section is comparatively reasonable. Furthermore, this article provides detailed criterion-referenced score interpretation for the HSK (Elementary-Intermediate) listening section. It provides Listening and Speaking Can Do Statements for different Chinese listening level test takers. It describes for all HSK users the test takers' listening and speaking abilities in real-life and academic settings, which correspond to their scores on the HSK (Elementary-Intermediate). These descriptions are powerful supplements for HSK (Elementary-Intermediate) score interpretations. |
