This thesis studies the narrative patterns of Chinese novels from 1840 to 1917. By analyzing the four kinds of narrative patterns and their characteristics, the cause to form and determine the narrative patterns and the cultural implications behind them, the thesis hopes to, finally, combine "inside study" with "outside study",that is, combine study of the narrative patterns with study of the modern society, history and culture. The full thesis includes five parts.Introduction introduces the meaning, the purpose and the train of thought of the thesis briefly, and defines " narrative pattern" briefly .Chapter One analyses the four kinds of narrative patterns of Chinese novels from 1840 to 1917: the third person unlimited point of view pattern, the third person limited point of view pattern, the first person limited point of view pattern and the drama-point-of- view pattern. Then, on the basis of the above, the thesis explores some important characteristics of the narrative patterns of modern novels: contradiction and variety; trend of melting subjectively of narrating; a kind of inherent close relationship between narrative patterns and theme.Chapter Two seeks some factors to form and determine the patterns: "contradiction" of the modern social culture psychology; "misunderstanding" in the course of influx of western culture; change of author group; change of way of creation of novel and change of way of circulation of novel works, and so.Chapter Three analyses cultural implications behind the narrative patterns: the individual' s awakening; the emergence of modernity. The last part reviews the train of thought of argumentation of the full thesis briefly, puts forward the conclusion of the article further.
