| The thesis deals with the dissensions between America and Canada about reciprocal trade and their relations. It has four chapters:In chapter one, these things are discussed: how the first reciprocity treaty between America and Canada was signed and what influence the treaty had on the relations of two countries. To meet their respective demands, America and Canada resigned the reciprocity treaty of 1854 through 7-year negotiations with troubles. The treaty started the intercommunication between America and Canada, especially promoted two countries' economic intercourse. In chapter two, firstly I analyze the reason and the influence of America abrogating the Reciprocal Treaty of 1854. In order to control even annex Canada, America changed the policy on Canadian in virtue of abrogating the treaty. In the more than 20 years after that, it always refused to resigned reciprocal treaty with Canada and purposed to destroy Canadian economy. Secondly I dissert the Canadian countermeasure--raising the tariff and developing the manufacturing. Lastly I analyze American superficial observation on Canada from the angle of Canadian policy's impact. In chapter three, I analyze two countries' attitudes and policies on Commercial Union which was the climax of dissensions about reciprocal trade. America tried to accomplish two countries' approach in politics through the unification of their tariffs. Canada debated the advantages and disadvantages of Commercial Union, and finally abandoned both of Commercial Union and "unrestricted reciprocity". However, America persisted in controlling Canada, which resulted in that Canada gave up pursuing American reciprocal tariff. At last Canada began to strengthen the relations with the British Empire. In chapter four, I summarize American--Canadian relations which are responded by the reciprocal trade. America attempted to control Canada and reestablished the pattern of North America in virtue of reciprocity. Canada struggled to safeguard its independence. So a kind of strong antagonism permeated in the relations of two countries. In economic field, especially in manufacturing tariff, they had an irreconcilable conflict. Two countries respectively adopt protective tariff to prevent the imputing of the opposite side's goods. The result was that Canadian benefits were destroyed.American--Canadian dissensions about reciprocal trade reflect greatly two countries' relations inthe latter half of the 19th century. In the period, antagonism is the prominent character in two countries' relations. |
