A Study Of Lin Jingxi's Poetry Image

Lin Jingxi is one of the outstanding poets left by ruined Song in achievements of poetry writing at the beginning of Yuan Dynasty. This thesis aims to make a rather thorough study of his poetry from the aspect of the image of his poems. The thesis falls into the following five parts, which respectively thoroughly discusses the implication of the images of Lin's poem and the deep reason behind such images.Part one. As the definition to image, which is one the most important conception in literary theory and critical theory, is disputable in use and in understanding, the thesis first of all introduces the changes of the definition to image to illustrate its true meaning in Chinese traditionally poetic study and to give a reasonable definition to it as the base for the following discussion.Part two. Based on Chen Zengjie's book "Notes to Lin Jingxi's anthology", the part categorize in detail the images in Lin's poem which can best represent his ideal personality and state of living, to gain a general understanding from individuals. This can be the base of the following further discussion.Part three. This part focuses on the deep implication of the images of Lin's poem, which are characterized as type-oriented. This is analyzed from three aspects: the fortitude and self-restraint in his personality; the revelation of his solitude and sadness from his deep heart; and the spiritual pursuit transcending over material need.Part four: With the result of analysis of the image of Lin's poem, this part analyzes the general tone of his poems, which make Lin Jingxi distinctive from his contemporary poets. It has two characters: qing-kong and emotional; sullen and mighty.Part five. This part is a discussion of causes leading to the forming of the images of Lin's poem. By analyzing the social condition and poetry-creating environment in the field of poem of the time of, it proves that the form of Lin's images is not an accidental result. These further discussions of the deep elements that caused the images of Lin's poem reinforce our understanding of the images of his poems and the same characteristics of all the poets left from ruined Song Dynasty.
