An Investigation On The Word Sha(煞) During Early Modern Chinese

Three kinds of sha(ç…ž) in this thesis ( as complement adverbial modifier and predicate) came into being from early ninth century to early tenth century. They were dialectical words around Yellow River and its northern areas originally. With the time processing and the society changing, the word sha(ç…ž) which indicates high degree has been used a great lot in Wu Dialect in modern times. On the contrary, sha(ç…ž has been replaced by the word si(æ­») in PuTongHua and many mandarin dialects. Tt's obvious that sha(ç…ž) has experienced a process of diffuseness and transference from the north to the south. The thesis gives a detailed investigation and research of sha(ç…ž) (mainly three kinds of sha(ç…ž) and double-syllable word constituted by sha(ç…ž)) in the representative literatures during Tang, Song, Yuan and Ming Dynasty. The thesis makes clear the use and change of sha(ç…ž) in different times and different areas during Early Modern Chinese, unveils the diffuse and transference process of sha(ç…ž) from dialect to general language and from general language to dialect. In the same time, the thesis has also investigated and analysed the word si(æ­») in the representative literatures during Tang, Song, Yuan and Ming Dynasty, has tried to discover clearly the diachronic and synchronic similarities and differences between sha(ç…ž) and si(æ­») and the superseding of them.
