1980s is a significant period in the history of Chinese dramas: numbers of dramatists and drama theorists made great efforts to explore Chinese dramas, and all kinds of new-styled explorative dramas came in a continuous stream, which greatly transformed the contemporary drama. The achievements focused on the form of the dramas under the guide of Brecht's theory of "epos drama". This paper aims to discuss the explorative dramas from the perspective of narratives. The innovation of the narrative pattern on the explorative dramas, which came from the contemporary "drama crisis" and the Western drama streaming in China, is especially characterized with the narrator entry into the stage and the change of the time and space. While the narrator entered the stage, the narrative character of the drama is more outstanding and the form more vivacious. This innovated the time and space of drama, that is to say, made it more flexible. The explorative dramas transformed their narrative pattern, which changed the visage of the Chinese drama, and added much vigor to it. But on the other hand, the explorers addicted themselves to the forms and ignored the content, which influenced the art level of the 1980s in a whole. This paper provides the objective and subjective reasons for the innovation, its performance, value, and reveals the significance and the shortage of the explorative dramas in a hope to offer some references and enlightenments for the contemporary drama.
