Systemic Functional Approach To The Translation Of The Poem 《Hao Liao Ge》

This thesis is an attempt to study the translation of the poem 《Hao Liao Ge》in the framework of Halliday's Systemic-Functional Linguistics. Translation is an activity of tremendous importance in the modern world. With the blossom in thefield of linguistics after World War II, there has appeared a tendency of integratingthe achievements in linguistics into translation studies. As a result, in the literature to date, there has been an evident trend of applying Halliday's theory to translation studies. Many foreign scholars and several Chinese scholars have successfully utilized Hallidayan Linguistics with reference to a range of translation issues.This thesis contains five chapters. The first chapter presents an introduction of this thesis as a whole. The second chapter gives a brief overview of Halliday's theory and a general survey of the studies that have been done by several foreign and Chinese scholars on this subject. Chapter three mainly deals with the problem of context and the translation of the poem 《Hao Liao Ge》, giving a comparative analysis of the corpus data from the perspective of context of culture and context of situation. Chapter four, then, gives further explanation from the angle of three metafunctions, namely the experiential metafunction, interpersonal metafunction and textual metafunction. The focus will be mainly lying in issues like transitivity system, mood structure, evaluation and thematic structure, certain discussions about other points such as logical relations, polarity, cohesion and information structure will also make appearance in the part concerned.It is hoped that the present study will provide a good insight into the translation studies, especially issues about poetic translation and that the applicability of Systemic-Functional Linguistics to poetic translation is well tested.
