An Analysis Of The Relationship Between The Cai Yuan-pei's Policy Of Accommodating Different Ideas And The Western Cultures

In the early twentieth century, Cai Yuan-pei , a well-known educationist , advocated brightly a school-running policy of accommodating different ideas in the Beijing university to reform the past teaching and the scientific inquiry which oppressed teachers and students and copied the ancients and went on with an inflexible pattern. Cai Yuan-pei severely abolished the reactive current which insisted on reading the unavailable lection and adored Confucius as the savior. And he began to study the new western thoughts to popularize democracy and science.This article simply studied the origin of Cai Yuan-pei's policy of accommodating different ideas and analyzed the relationship between the" policy" and the western culture:1, the history of western social science offers the academic foundation for the policy; 2, the western thoughts and practice of democracy and freedom provides the groundwork of social idea for the policy; 3 , the educational practice in western countries leads the way for the policy.Finally, the article pointed out that the policy would still have strongly vitality and practicing significances to guide our activity after one hundred years. So it gives us more suggestions: 1 , understanding rightly the spirits of the western cultures; 2, persisting in the idea in studying science with freedom; 3, training students or other people to have the personality of thinking on their own.It is hoped in this article that we should accept the policy critically to develop the socialist education cause, prosper the scientific inquiry and foster more and more persons with the ability for the modern construction of our country.
