The translator is a decisive as well as indispensable factor both in the process of translating and for a successful final translation. The thesis, based mainly on the theory from Gadamer's philosophical hermeneutics, first tries to list and correct the wrong opinions held on the translator for long, coming to the assumption that the process of translating is a dialogue between the translator and the text, and then attempts to probe into and clarify in detail the status and functions of the translator and his subjectivity in translation and to elaborate on the related aspects such as the restrictions on the translator's subjectivity, the issue of retranslation, and the translator's quality. What has been pointed out in particular is the realization of the translator's subjectivity and its degree in the process of translating. It holds that the translator's subjectivity is bound to be revealed in the target text but will be different in different target texts with different translators.
