Vision is one of the most important sensory channel in human beings. It is evaluated that at least 70% of information is received and perceived through vision. At beginning of Christian era , human beings begun to study vision, because of its importance. And many well-known scientists and artists, such as Da Vinci, Tikal, Newton and so on, have contributed to research on vision. Though man has begun to study vision at beginning of Christian era, many branches of vision, such as bio-vision, its sense process etc, were still puzzled. In all research fields of vision, visual acuity is a very important topic all time. So far researchers have found that visual acuity is different from cultural background, gender and characteristics of figures themselves etc, but there is universally a problem that researchers have not deeply analyzed the causes that lead to these differences, and only simply described them. What are facts that cause the differences of visual acuity? And what is the mechanism? This study will give answers to above problems, through a set of cards that are made by a couple, Hirch and Ghiradella. The study adopted the experimental material, which Dr Hirch and Ghiradella had used when they came to Central China Normal University in 1985. There are 3 steps: First, select subjects. Given the purpose of the study, I selected two population as samples, including middle school students and college students, comparative sample. Middle school students sample included two population, superior grade and inferior grade. Second, execute formal investigation. In order to reduce measurement error, investigator conducted it in person, and adopted standardized procedural. Finally, collect data and analyze it. Data was collected immediately, in case of data running off. The research made use of SPSS 10.0 for Windows that it is very popular with scientific study. Through statistic analysis, I found three facts: First, there is significantly different between college students and middle school students in figure discrimination; Second, figure discrimination is different from gender, and men's visual acuity is significantly higher than women's. Third, orientation of figures will seriously affect subjects' visual acuity. Based on the results, the causes were analyzed. Finally, the limitation of the research and suggestion were made.
