Abstract/Summary:
Changjiang Oversea Travel Company (COTC) and Victoria Cruises Company (VCC) are the two biggest companies in Yangtze River cruising. The traditional training system of these two cruise boat companies is to carry out a one-week internship for new river guides on the cruise boat supervised by an experienced river guide. After this short internship period, the new river guide has to work by himself/herself independently. This traditional training system has its advantages, but objectively speaking, it is not efficient enough. In this thesis, the author designs an experimental formal training course for the new English Yangtze River guides of the COTC and VCC. Other cruise boat companies that deal with the Yangtze River cruising can use this course, too. It is the first time in this field that the new English Yangtze River guides have a formal training course with syllabus, written materials, etc. A survey study is undertaken to find out the advantages and disadvantages of the traditional training system and what the new English river guides should learn. Based on the survey study, the author designs an experimental formal training course. This course not only absorbs the advantages of the traditional training system, but also pays great attention to the fields that might have previously been ignored in the traditional one: to reduce the new English river guides' anxiety, cultivate their confidence, help them master the core knowledge, improve their audio-oral English and help them master the art of sales. In addition, an experimental study and a case study are conducted to find out whether the experimental formal training course designed by the author is better and more efficient than the traditional training system.
