This thesis focuses on the researches on calamity-relieving activities of Zeng Guoquan, a former famous general of Xiang(Hunan Province) Army during his stay as a grand coordinator in Shanxi( 1877-1880), as well as the study of social behavior and activity of his calamity-relieving work. It probes initially calamity-relieving figures.The paper consists of three parts which make a profound analysis of such three things as the difficult situation which Zeng Guoquan was faced with when he hold the position of Shanxi grand coordinator in dire peril, the effective measures to relieve the calamities and the re-construction plan made by him, and also explores the characteristics of calamity-relieving activities made by Zeng, compared with traditionally political control. It evaluates objectively his merits in relieving calamities, and the experienced and influence on the following generations.Zeng Guoquan used to be a general of Xiang Army, and then acted as Shanxi grand coordinator, and finally became a major foreign-affair minister in the late Qing Dynasty. During his three-year calamity-relieving work in Shanxi he not only exercised himself positively and made great change in his political career, but also contributed significantly to the development of local society in Shanxi, which are subjects we should strain to carry out the further researches on...
