The issue on intellectual skills is an important question being discussed in the field of cognitive psychology and educational psychology. Psychologists have studied intellectual skills since the 1960s when they began to study problem solving. Among the researches on intellectual skills, psychologists have paid much attention to acquiring rules.The researches on intellectual skills began in the 1970s in China and there have been many studies about acquiring intellectual skills of subject knowledge such as maths including algebra and geometry, physics and etc. There were only few researches on English. This article focused on the English grammar rules and investigated the ways to increase the speed of acquiring them.The first part of the article was research backgrounds. The writer reviewed the theory of intellectual skills and the existing researches on it at home and abroad. Then, the writer tried to comply several different practice materials and investigate which material was most suitable for which phase of acquiring grammar rules.In the second part, two experiments were made to investigate the process of acquiring English grammar rules. The writer chose 749 senior high school students as subjects, and designed different practice materials as experimental tools. At first, the subjects were required to learn one of the materials which were complied according to different aims. Then, they had a test.The results showed that:1) In the early phase of acquiring English grammar rules, the examples complied by production rules helped the students acquire them, and they were also propitious to the transfer of these intellectual skills.2) The examples written by the ways the experts solve these problems could benefit the students building the schemata of experts and facilitate the automatization of related intellectual skills in the final phase of acquiring English grammar rules.3) When the examples with production rules were used in the final phase of acquiring English grammar rules, the students were demanded to have much better primal level and the ability to organize acquired rules to rebuild the schemata of experts.4) The examples written by the ways the experts solve these problems could also make the students grasp the English grammar rules, but the students was apt to make mistakes when they used these rules.
