Truth" & "Beauty" In Rhetoric

Rhetoric is a branch of linguistics. It adopts, selects, modifies the language according to the subject and context in order to get the excellent expression and communication. Logic is always believed to study the form and regularity of mind. They are in close relationship. Carrying out logical study towards rhetoric is a branch of logical study of natural language. It has great important meaning for writing and communication from the point of view of indication and communication. Additionally, it improves the building of logical study of natural language and makes people's thinking more precise and clear.This thesis believes that "truth "or "beauty" would be in harmony with logic. "Truth" in rhetoric refers to express and reflect world truly and it's the basic aim of rhetoric. "Beauty" refers to beautify the language on the basis of truth in order to realize the artistry of language. "Truth" is the content of thinking and "beauty" is its form. They depend on each other and organize an integrated entirety. The harmony between them is the best state and also the perfect result of rhetoric.This thesis will elaborate the harmonious relationship between rhetoric and logic from the following sections:I. Rhetoric & LogicFirst this thesis makes clear the original relationship between rhetoric and logic. Investigating its whole developing process of entirety-depart-entirety, we believe that rhetoric not only has the ability of beautifying the language, but also has strong logical function. These build a foundation for the main body of the following parts.II. "Truth"-the Combination of Rhetoric and LogicRhetoric as one of speech act wants to be successful, it must convey the true thinking appropriately. That's to say, it must base on "truth". And "truth" in logic indicates the explicity of the notions, appropriation of judgement and validity of reasoning. And the elaboration will be carried out as follows:Word polish and its logical analysis. The words in language is the notion of thinking form. Word rhetoric-collocation or some concrete figures of speech such as tautology, onomatopoeia antithesis, exaggeration -should make use of word to suit its notion which is expressed. That's to say using word appropriately.Sentence selection and logical analysis. The selection of sentence in rhetoric is the problem of judgement on logic. Whether the selection of sentence form on parallelism or climax should consider its appropriation in judgement. That's to say, the expression should be more appropriate and useful.Sentence collection and its logical analysis. Many sentence forms and rhetoric devices such as the selection of metaphor, palindrome and string style are all concerning conclusion which directs the effect of rhetoric. The reasoning here means pragmatic reasoning and it relies on certain context. And there's no necessary relationship between presupposition and conclusion. It aims at persuading and assuring .III. "Beauty-the Deep Connection of Rhetoric and Logic"Beauty" bases on truth and it's the best expression of rhetoric and can be shown in every of part of rhetoric and logic. This section will discuss the harmony between them in deep levels from the four laws of identity, contradiction, excluded middle and sufficient reason, in the discussion, this thesis explores deep logic and aesthetic feeling from some typical figures of speech.IV .Combination of "Truth" and "Beauty"-the Best StateIn the combination of "truth" and "beauty", "truth" means that rhetoric bases on logic, truly expresses the thinking and reflects the world. It's the basic aim. "Beauty" composes aesthetic feeling and shows some deep meaning. These two consists of characteristics of "pursuing beauty". However, whether "truth" and "beauty" or the combination of the two, their effects of rhetoric have the close relationship with context.
