| In the 1980s and 1990s, in the field of pragmatics------a new branch in linguistics,more and more scholars began to divert their attentions to the dynamic researches of utterances instead of stagnating in the static nature of remarks. Dynamic pragmatics focuses on the internal motives of utterances, that is, why people choose one kind of language form instead of another one to express their feelings in the intercommunication. It is pragmatists' task and duty to make reasonable and sufficient explanations of these motives and reasons. It is the dynamic research of language that becomes the original task of pragmatics. In foreign countries, some scholars and researchers have already explored such topics and made tremendous success. They make full use of the language materials in politics and everyday life, and gain endless lifeforce and energy. It is because of this international development and trend in pragmatics that my dissertation aims to analyze the native language material from a brand-new perspective. In this thesis, I will analyze the remarks at press conferences held by Premier Zhu from 1998 to 2001, trying to explore its discourse and pragmatic value as a special style (genre), attempting to discover various features from this dynamic analysis of nativelanguage material------Chinese, and realize the combination of language withpolitics, social reality and daily life, thus acquiring endless energy and inexhaustible resources from the treasure house of languagesThe thesis can be divided into four chapters. In the first chapter, 1 introduce the resources of the language material, the dynamic development of international pragmatics and the framework of this thesis, which fully interpret the motive of selecting this research topic and the academic originally, perspective and method of this research.In the second chapter, I analyze the special style or genre of the remarks at press conferences: mass media and politics from stylistic view, then list the five features of them which are timeliness and richness in content; employment of political and technical terms on lexical level; application of long compound and rhetorical sentences on syntactical level; adoption of some writing skills and rhetorical devices on discourse level; highly summarized and being logical on textual level.All these features lay a solid foundation for the further analysis of the language material.In the third chapter, I analyze the remarks based on M.A.K. Halliday' s situational context and systemic-functional theory; as to the former, I analyze them from the perspective of field, tenor and mode which define and confine the features of languages on various occasions. As to systemic-functional (metafunctional) theory, the basic functions of language, which are ideational, interpersonal and textual, I provide the first-hand statistics, that is their realizations in transitivity system, modality system and cohesion system and we can draw the conclusion that the features of the language material must be in agreement with the style of the remarks.Then in the last chapter, I analyze the remarks by applying the three major principles: Cooperation Principle of Grice, Politeness Principle of Leech and Relevance Theory of Sperber and Wilson in pragmatics with sufficient examples as well as proper comments. In addition, I summarize another two features of theremarks as spoken language------humor and paralinguistic features, which serve asinvisible weapons in oral speech. These analyses provide a new perspective and method for the development of pragmatics..In summary, the purpose of my dissertation is to apply foreign theory to anal nnative language material-------Chinese, and the analysis demonstrates thetremendous vitality of language resources and the universality of foreign theory in application to Chinese language material.
