Laoshe is a diligent and versatile Chinese writer. Like many other modern Chinese writers, his works and life are closely connected with Chinese and western culture. This paper explores Laoshe and his works especially the early ones and discuss his unique personality, writing style and the relation between Chinese and western culture. Conclusions reached are as follows:Laoshe personality and works in his early life are linked with Chinese and western culture; Laoshe forms his unique cultural view; religion has profound influence on his personality and works; to attack national weakness is the theme of his work; Laoshes art of humor is not only a writing skill but possesses deep cultural meaning. Thus, we have good reason to call Laoshe a cultural giant.
