The research and Application of polymeric Materials on Conservation and Restoration of Cultural RelicYang XiaohuiAbstract: The fundamental conceptions of the application of polymeric materials on conservation and restoration of cultural relics has been introduced, the application of polymeric materials on conservation and restoration of cultural relics including stone carving, grotto, woods, paper sheets and textiles has been reviewed briefly in this paper.Based on the physical and chemical properties the evaluation of the degradation degree of silk fabrics were researched systematically. The characteristic of degradation degree will help to the selection and developing of conservation methods. The modern s i Iks were aged by heat, 1 ight and hydrolysis. The final objects was to select effect ive evaluat ion methods of degradation degree, and it is hoped that the methods can evaluation the aged degree of the silk. The artificial aged silk was taken the place of the decayed si Ik cultural relic. Initial studied indicate that polyvinyl alcohol and cross-linking chitosan was suitable conservation materials for strengthen intensity of decayed silk in many formalize membrane materials. In this paper, the factors of concentration and amount of cross-linking agent were systematical studied by experiments. The good conservation conditions had been defined. It is clear that whether Polyvinyl formal or cross-linking CS can increase the intensity of the aged silk, but the breaking length of the aged silk was decreased. The systems of the 2Y.PVA+0. 8ml formaldehyde and 0. 75%CS + 1.6ml formaldehyde can improve the intensity of the aged silk. The two systems can increase the breaking intensity about four times than untreated silk; but the intensity of the system of the 3%PVA + 0.6mL formaldehyde and 0. 25%CS+1. 2mL/ 1. 6mL formaldehyde only increase two times than untreated one .The handle of the PVA system was softer than the cross-linking CS system. The silk of Jin Dynasty sample had been treated by the water soluble macromolecule such as PVA or the cross-linking CS, and had got better result, both the breaking intensity and breaking strengthen of the silk had been improved. It looked clean, brighter, colorless. what's more , the handle of the silk were soft.
