Dud to the translation of western literature and culture, the Modem Chinese Literature had undergone a great change from literature language to the literature styles since the May 4th new cultural movement. If there had been no translation of western literature and culture, the modern Chinese literature would have had different forms. This paper is going to outline the course of western literature translation in Chinese modern history from the second half of 19th century to the first half of 20th century, to analyze the great influence of translated literature on modern Chinese literature.I. The Outline of Modern Translated Literature (from 1840-1919)1. The first phase of modern translated literature (1840-1894)2. The second phase of modern translated literature (1895-1906)3. The third phase of modem translated literature (1907-1919)II. The Outline of Modern Translated Literature (from May 4th, 1919 to 1949)The translation and introduction of western culture and literature had specific feature of this phase. The content was abundant and form was various.1. The New Youth Magazine's activities of literature translationThe New Youth Magazine started publication on September 1915. The founders of the magazine had introduced different western literature trends into China.2. The Literature Research Association's activities of literature translation The Literature Research Association was one of the most important literaturegroups in modern Chinese history. It was also the most important literature translation groups. Based on Short Stories Monthly, the founders of the Association specialized in translating western realist writers' works and the literature of the oppressed nations.3. The Creation Magazine's activities of literature translationBegan 1922, the numbers of Creation Magazine focused on translation of westernRomantic Literature and its writers' works.4. The literature translation on times of "Left Union"From the foundation of Chinese Left Writers' Union to the eve of anti-Japanese War, the literature translation was mainly focused on western realist writers' works.III. Conclusion:In a word, translated literature not only stimulated Chinese literature revolution in the early of 20th century, but also had a profound influence on modern Chinese writers. To some extent, modern Chinese literature owes a great deal to translated literature. Without translated literature, modern Chinese literature could not flourish.
