Mushanokoji Saneatsu is a representative writer of Shirakaba (the school of "White Birch") in Japan, whose literary idealogy of "individualistic humanitarianism" could be traced to the influence of Christianity, Tolstoy and Maeterinck. From March 1918 he consecutively brought out three "dialogues about Atarashii Mura (New Village)" in which he declared his dream of a communal living by setting up "New Villages". This idea of Atarashii Mura (New Village) had a great impact on the ideology and literary viewpoint of Zhou Zuoren in the period of "the May-4th Movement". This thesis studies the development of Mushanokoji Saneatsu's literary theory and his "New Village" practice, the influence of his "New Village" movement on Zhou Zuoren, and Zhou's "New Village" practice in China as well, so as to speculate about the changes occurring in Zhou's ideology and literary viewpoints after his dream of "New Village" was shattered. The thesis attempts to put forward an independent view on the study of "the influence of Mushanokoji Saneatsu's Atarashii Mura and Its Impact on Zhou Zuoren"...
