The thesis describes present situation of college English classroom teaching met- hods and then puts forward the questions and descriptions of college English classro- om teaching methods by means of the case study of Northwest Normal University. A multi-method design is adopted, such as questioning, observing classroom activities and interviewing. The study is intended to carry out an empirical study and 10 English teachers and 754 students, including both freshmen and sophomores, involved in the sstudy. Through the analysis of the statistics from questionaires, observations and int- erview, the major findings are given as follows:1. On the whole, the dominating teaching methods between different classes and different teachers are lecture method, self-study instruction method, practice method and questioning method, applied in different orders. However, interactive teaching m- ethod interests stimulation method and class discussion method are expected by colle- ge students2. For college English teaching, because of large class size, more appropriate gu- idance from the teachers can be unavailable for the students. Meanwhile, the students are taught by experience due to weak teaching method consciousness of English teac- hers and the lack of perfect method system in the teaching process.3. The teaching methods fail to reflect the principle of purpose and development mainly because college English teachers pay more attention to the utilitarian nature.4. View the general conclusions as a whole, the main factors effected on the cho- ice of English teaching methods are responsibility, teaching concept and teacher's qua- ty.5. Although there are many influence factors that leads to various selection teac- hing methods of different teachers, the common affective factor is responsibility and secondly for teaching concept.Through the investigation and study, the author proposes the following measures on how to enhance the college English classroom teaching methods and improve coll- ege English teaching quality: changing teaching concept of English teachers; emphas- ing the full use of teaching methods; strengthening the English teachers' responsibility; paying attention to the reform of teaching methods; enhancing teachers' theory acco- mplishment; stressing flexible application of teaching methods; selecting effective te- aching methods; romoting large-class English teaching effect; decreasing the utilitari- an nature of teaching methods based on students' needs; improving self-ability throu- gh taking part in a variety of English activities.
