The present study explored the entire development process, i.e. origination, formation, and development, of Shaanxi oil paintings. We also put forward some suggestive thoughts with regards to the modernity of the Shaanxi oil paintings.This paper consisted of six parts. The first part discussed the preparation period of the Shaanxi oil paintings, which was represented by the works created in Yanan Period. In the second part, we argued that in the early post-liberation period, various foreign factors, such as oil paintings from the Soviet Union and other regions of China, facilitated the origination of the Shaanxi oil paintings, graduates from art schools and native oil painters exerted profound and positive influences on the development of the Shaanxi oil paintings; but in the Cultural Revolution period, Shaanxi oil paintings was badly beaten and free creation was limited to a great extent, and political theme was dominant and widespread. In the post-Cultural Revolution period, the Shaanxi oil paintings upset the conventional art. In the 1980s, Chinese oil paintings welcomed a golden development opportunity with the wave of economic reform and opening-up and the constant economic growth. Thanks to this free and comfortable cultural environment, professional group, art exhibition, and academic activities became increasingly active in all over the country, which therefore keep the oil paintings flourishing. Chinese oil paintings showed a discovery courage and creative enthusiasm, but quite amazing, Shaanxi oil paintings was at a standstill. In the 1990s, having underwent delirious and infatuated creation, the artists fell in a lingering condition. They began to rethink the nature of the oil paintings and concerned the real life and the immediate feelings. They created the Chinese paintings in its true sense in a way totally different from 1980s in vision and language. Shaanxi oil painter had achieved gratifying successes. During this period, Shaanxi oil painter Break down old conventions and yielded great results. In the fifth part, we introspected the development of the Shaanxi oil paintings and discussed its regional features, which was characterized mainly by physical geography, historical humanism, customs and habits, etc. We also analyzed its revolution under modernity. Modernity is a common question faced by contemporary Chinese art, and is a unavoidable question in the 21~st century for the development of Shaanxi oil paintings.The aim of this study is to depict the development of the Shaanxi oil paintings, which, we hope, will reveal the interaction between regional factors and social transformation in facilitating the development of Shaanxi oil paintings.
