An Interpretation On Gary Snyder's Poems -from The Perspective Of Zhu Guangqian's Aesthetics

Gary Snyder is one of a few American poets who have devoted their lives to practicing their beliefs, and he is considered as the only"unbeaten Beat"in Beat Generation who is still active among the contemporary poets. He started to compose poems in his early 20s to express his affections for the nature, and his career lasts for almost 6 decades, which has tremendously contributed to the development of ecopoetry. Chinese thoughts, Japanese culture and Native Indian philosophical views can be easily found in his poems, and it is the multi-cultures that have formed Snyder's unique style of his own. As his poems are concerned with the theme of environmental protection and ecological balance, he is regarded as an ecopoet. Moreover, many researches on him have been conducted from the perspective of ecology and ecoliterature. Since eastern culture has exerted non-ignorable influence on him, a certain amount of journals, dissertations and major works are on the relationship between Eastern culture and Snyder's poems. Within all the studying fields, there is one space that has not yet been fully developed—aesthetics, even though that can be read in some parts of some works. In addition, it is only a few domestic scholars who have approached Chinese theories to analyze literature works. Therefore, the author is trying to explore that field. As his literature reputation has been raised after his translational work and his prominent poetic creation is largely dependent on his translating experience, the author attempts to analyze Snyder's poems from two aspects—translational aesthetics and creative aesthetics.The thesis is divided into four chapters. An introduction to Snyder's life and his main works forms part one"An Ideal Member in the Real World". It is merely a simple sketch of Snyder's life, from his early childhood to the day he won the Ruth Lily's Prize 2008.The next part is the theoretical framework—an explanation of Chinese Aesthetician Zhu Guangqian's theory, including the unification of thoughts and language, the theory of the artistic-conception and the relationship between the word and the language, which paves the way to the analysis of Snyder's translational aesthetics and creative aesthetics.The translational aesthetics consists of the poetic intuition and the wild expression,and Snyder's creative aesthetics constitutes the last part. He realizes that human being is no more than tiny dust in the vast and everlasting universe, and hopes that men will be humble enough to aware the superiority of nature, and concludes that mankind should learn from their ancestors in order to get well along with the nature again.
